Seven briefs, each one designed to remove the easy option.
Every brief takes away the thing you'd normally reach for. One typeface. Two colors. No photography. What's left is the decision itself.
These take longer than they need to. The hours you spend stuck are the hours where your eye actually develops.
No brief here has a single right answer. You finish each one having defended a choice to yourself, which is how instinct gets built.
✦ People who finish fast (and secretly suspect they finish too fast).
✦ Self-taught designers closing the gap between their taste and their output.
✦ Designers between roles who want real work to do that isn't another portfolio refresh.
✦ Anyone who reaches for a reference before they reach for a pencil.
For most of my twenties I could make anything look finished, and I had no real idea whether any of it was good. What changed was setting myself briefs hard enough that I had to decide for myself, which took a great deal longer and worked.
These days I write a weekly letter, coach a handful of designers one to one, and spend most of my time with people who are stuck in the same place I was.
SoulFire Sparks is a monthly letter from me, filled with reflections on life, little discoveries, fresh inspiration, and gentle reminders to keep your own inner fire burning bright.
